Motorcycle Helmets - An Overview

Around a century ago, bikers did not worry about their safety and well being while they are driving motorcycles. This is because the motorcycles back then lack in features and power. The first motorcycles were built in 1885 and back then, no one cared about injuries and accidents from motorcycle driving.

Motorcycles started gaining speed when automobile techniques were improved and better resources were made available. As the motorcycles increase in speed, motorcycle accidents also increased. Because of this, motorcycle helmets became a necessity for motorcycle drivers. Helmets became very popular when motorcycle accidents increased.

As time goes by, motorcycle riders started to demand motorcycles with higher speed so Harley Davidson and Indian Motorcycles decided to make high-speed motorcycles. Because of this, the government decided to make helmets to avoid serious head injuries. A professor in the University of Southern California made the very first helmet in 1953.

As time goes by, a lot of high-speed motorcycles appear in the market and head protection became a necessity for motorcycle riders. Motorcycle helmet is one of the most important requirements for safety driving and it precedes other safety gears when it comes to protection. However, some motorcycle riders tend not to wear helmets because of reason like poor visibility and limit the hearing of the rider. These kinds of reasons are no longer true nowadays because of the introduction of new and improved helmets for motorcycle riders.

Helmets nowadays can now provide protection from debris, blasts, bugs and forceful winds. The helmets today are also designed to protect the ears from wind noise. When a rider encounters an impact in their head, the shell of the helmet compresses and it will disperse the force from the impact throughout the helmet. The force from the impact will be reduced because of the new features of the helmets. These helmets are usually made from fiber glass, Kevlar, polycarbonate plastic or carbon fiber.

A lot of motorcycle riders nowadays choose not to wear helmets if they will be given an option despite the risk of motorcycle accidents and the innovation in the designs of motorcycle helmets. Due to this fact, a lot of countries all over the world decided to make wearing a helmet mandatory by including it in their law. The law will help encourage the motorcycle riders to wear safety helmets while driving motorcycles to avoid head injuries.

Wearing helmets while driving or riding a motorcycle is a must if they value their life and safety.
